The Athena I. Martinou Foundation was founded in 2021 with the aim of supporting non-profit organisations which are active in Greece. The Foundation awards grants in the areas of social welfare, health, education, culture and the environment. It is a non-profit organisation which in addition to its nationwide outreach and cross-sectoral engagement lays particular emphasis on issues related to the sea. The Foundation has at the core of its mission the practical support and mobilisation of organisations, seeking always to maximise the benefits accruing from its grants. For this reason, it prioritises the creation of different types of partnership. In the Foundation’s philanthropic strategy for the year 2023, there are not only projects directly and indirectly related to the sea – the Foundation’s primary area of interest – but support is also given to projects of nationwide scope and national importance. As well as grants, the Foundation also gives scholarships. The Scholarship Programme, with the sea as a dominant theme, is in the planning stage and will be launched in the 2023-2024 academic year.
