The Association of Friends of and Protection for the Natura 2000 Areas of South Corfu was established (officially) in 2020 with the aim of acting and mobilizing citizens and authorities for the effective protection of the Natura 2000 protected areas of South Corfu. These areas are the Lefkimmi Salt Lake, the Korissia Lagoon (along with the coastal zone of Issos and Halikouna), the river of Messonghi and the marine zone of Messonghi with its posidonia meadow. All of these important ecosystems need substantial protection in order to be preserved, as so far official government agencies have hardly taken any action.
For the first years of its operation, the association intends to inform the citizens and authorities of Corfu about the value of these ecosystems, about the possibilities of sustainable development and ecotourism in southern Corfu focusing on these protected areas and to carry out interventions, actions and complaints whenever it deems actions are taken that are either illegal or inconsistent with sustainable land use and development. So far, there have been political interventions (announcements), coastal clean-up actions, meetings and discussions in support of other environmental organizations in Corfu and public information through the internet and mass media.
